Apparence: D’un noir pas trop foncé, avec des teintes rouge cuivrées et brunâtres. Quasi comme un Scotch Ale, mais en plus foncé. Mousse bien serrée, d’un beige léger.

Au Nez: Chocolat. Gâteaux. Fudge. Les cerises sont bien présentes (baies, petits fruits rouges). Beurre de noisettes grillées, cassonade et réglisse noir. Présence de malt pâle. Fruits secs, dates, prunes sont bien agencés à celles de chocolats.

En Bouche: Chocolat noir. Cacao poudreux. Le gout des cerises est bien équilibré et authentique. Sans impressions de sirop ou de bonbon. Oui, on perçoit cette impression de gâteaux Forêt-Noire liquide, de fraise, de baies. Brownies un peu brûlés sur les bords et du coconut, contribue à ajouter davantage de complexité. Grains caramélisés. Léger côté pâtisserie. La buvabilité demeure élevée, en partie grâce à un effet en bouche pas trop lourdaud. Cependant, le corps est un brin aqueux et il manque de ce côté crémeux, souvent synonyme du style. La finale est mi-sèche, avec un peu de sucre résiduel venant du lactose, balancé par le côté torréfié robuste du malt. Douce amertume. Terreuse. Herbacée. Subtilement résineuse. Café Américano. Bel équilibre.

En Résumé: Tel qu’annoncé, les cerises sont à l’avant-scène et le combo fruits rouges/choco fonctionne à merveille. C’est équilibré et facile d’approche. Le côté torréfié n’est pas trop dans-ta-face. Elle pourrait bénéficier d’un peu plus de corps et de caractère soyeux, mais l’usage de fruit/jus à parfois l’effet d’amincir un peu une bière. Cependant, cela augmente sa buvabilité. Bref, c’est bien plaisant.

Appearance: Light black, with brown and reddish copper tones. Almost like a Scotch Ale, but, of course, darker and an added red tinge. A medium, tight and foamy light tan colored head sits proudly on top.

Nose: Chocolaty. Cakey. Fudgy. The cherries are giving out nice aromas of red berries. There is some roasted hazelnuts butter and black licorice notes. Hints brown sugar, toffee and pale malt too. Dates, plums and dark fruit, are right at home with the satisfying chocolate notes.

Taste: Dark chocolate. Dusty coco powder. The cherries are more present and the taste is genuine. Not cough syrup or candy like. Yes, you do get an impression of liquid black forest cake and a hint of strawberry too. Some burnt brownies and coconut for added depth. Caramelized grains. Light pastry character. The drinkability remains surprisingly high, thanks to a medium light mouthfeel. Altho, it does feels a bit watery and the body lack some of that creaminess we come to expect from the style. The finish is mostly dry, you do get some sweetness, balanced by the bitterness of the roasted malt. Light bitter dark coffee. Earthy and herbal undertones. Slightly resinous. Again, balanced.

Overall: As advert, the cherries are nicely showcased and the choco/red fruit combo is enticing. Balanced and approachable. The roasted character isn’t too forward. Maybe lacks a bit of body/mouthfeel, but fruits can have that effect on a beer. On the other hand, it’s very easy drinking. Very pleasant beer overall.

Tom Green is a true Canadian icon of comedy. Go watch his new stand up show on his Youtube channel, it’s very funny and authentic material. There are loads of hidden gems over there, with the likes of Andy Dick and Harland Williams, also with stuff dating from his pre MTV era. He was ahead of his time. Truly worth a watch.
