Apparence : Orange cuivré avec une petite mousse qui se dissipe rapidement, typique d’un vin d’orge.
Nez : La pêche, la mangue et le pamplemousse. On perçoit aussi de la lime et de l’ananas. Très tropicale comme nez avec aussi des notes d’épinette et de résine. Une touche de pâte et de croûte de pain. Sucré et fruité. Un peu d’urine de chat et de cannabis frais.
En Bouche : La marmelade et le pamplemousse. Les agrumes et les fruits à chair jaunes sont bien présents également. Un coté forestier et résineux s’ajoute au tableau, sans trop prendre le dessus. Ananas, lime et peut-être aussi melon. Assez fidèle au nez. Le pain blanc et une dose modérée de sucre résiduel.
En résumé Mon premier Vin d’Orge Américain, donc je me suis référé au site BJCP pour la description du style et cette bière me semble très représentative. Moins de sucre venant du malt et une amertume plus agressive venant du houblon, comparé a un Barleywine Anglais, avec une finale beaucoup plus sèche. Les similitudes avec une Double IPA sont bien évidentes. Apres une période d’ajustement, on apprivoise mieux le produit. Ce n’est peut-être pas ma préférée venant de cette microbrasserie, cependant ça demeure une excellente bière qui vaut la peine d’être essayer. À la votre!

Abv : 8.5%
Appearance : Copper orange with a small head that die down quickly, typical of a Barleywine.
Nose : Peach, mango, grapefruit, lime, pineapple, tons of tropical notes. Piney evergreen notes, bread dough, bread crust, cereal, toffee, malt and fruit sweetness and a touch of dankness/cat pee caracter.
Taste : Marmelade, grapefruit, very citrusy and tropical with also pineapple, lime and melon. Also alot of forest like caracter and evegreen notes. Very resinous and piney. Cereal breadyness with moderate sweetness from the malt (for a barleywine).
Overall :Pretty much what you would expect from an american barleywine which is a beer big on both hops and malt that differ alot from a traditional english barleywine which carry a low hop bitterness. In this one the hop bitterness is in your face and unapologetic. We dont get alot of american style barleywine so this can be puzzling at first. This is a big, bold, and loud beer but that manage to carry a balance (somewhat) amongst those strong flavors. It does reminds you of a double ipa but with a darker appearance and more malt backbone. I would advise drinking this beer fresh and avoid aging this beer to experience all the intensity of the hops that balance the big malt presence. Usually i prefer drinking barleywine at warmer temp but since this is rather hopped up i prefer to drink this a bit colder.
That is just a personal preference. Its hard to rate this beer since we dont get much of this style in Québec and to be honest this is my first American Style Barleywine. But from what i get from the BJCP website, this is very much true to the style. My first glass got me rather perplex as i was expecting something less hoppy and more sweet just because thats how i know Barleywine. It is very hoppy but without too much caramel in the way. This beer really grew on me the more i drank it. Seems like they did a great job with this. Dangerously drinkable at 8.5 abv. You’ve been warned. Cheers!
